Film, 'Dream' completed

Yup so 'Dream' is finally done. It's only 3 minutes and 20 seconds but it took me about a half a year to complete this film... I am not 100% satisfied with the result but who does...? I am happy though this is my very first official film that I finished since I got out of UCLA although there were a lot of freelance and experimental pieces I have done in last couple of years. The film is being sent to film festivals and I will keep updating the premiere and screening info of this film here on my blog. For now, the only clip you can view of this film is my 30 seconds vimeo trailer.

Here is another film still of my new film, 'Dream.' I decided to continue uploading the film stills and maybe trailer(s) since I won't be putting my entire film up online until a year later. Medium here is a pencil and oil pastels on paper and it's from a scene where a fish is diving into the water.

My expected completion date of this film is at the end of this month (January 2012) I will post a premiere info in this coming spring. Thanks for checking it out~

I started off my new year's eve and new year with drinking and drawing
"Intelligentsia Coffee" in Old Pasadena, a couple of blocks away from my house.
They have "GOOOOD" coffees. I love taking Allie(my dog) there.

So here are some drawings I did at Intelligentsia. I used pen and watercolor.
They have such unique looking coffee cups.

It's a beautiful combination of my animators' art works by Erin Fitzgerald and Leon Lam. This is one of my favorite scenes and it appears more towards the end of the film :)

Here is a little sneak peek of my new film, 'Dream,' which is very near completion. I have been mainly using oil pastels and watercolor for this film but the film really is a mixed medium. This still is from a scene where a fish dives into water.

Dream (2012) - Poster

This is a poster for my new film coming in 2012.
'Dream' is about a person that sees the world through his mind and imagination, inspired by my own grandfather.

The first film festival that accepts this short film will be my premiere place :) unless I decide to show this at RCC first... The pre-production of this film started this past summer and it will be completed pretty soon. I am very fortunate to have Leon, Erin, and Josue as my animation and storyboard crew. They're doing an awesome job. Music is being composed by Tate Hamasaka, a very talented composer I met at Cal Arts a while back.

Medium of this film is mainly 'oil pastels.' But also some pencil and drawing markers are involved in some scenes. I will post a 30 seconds trailer for this film in about a week and the next thing I will post regarding this film will be the premiere info next year. Thank you all for your time.

Maya Erdelyi's visit at RCC (10/18/11)

Earlier today, Maya visited Riverside City College as a guest animator. RCC Art Dept was very fortunate to have her at RCC today. In my opinion, Maya is full of spirit, colors, and design sensibility. She's an MFA candidate of Cal Arts Experimental Animation at the moment and she studied art and animation in Harvard and Cooper Union. She worked with world-wide known artists and directors such as Michel Gondry, Aaron Rose, and Jamie Caliri. It was great to hear her commercial work experiences as well as her personal filmmaking experiences. She's an expert in "Cut-Out Animation" and "Stop Motion Animation." No wonder her work has shown at places like The Hammer Museum, MoCA, and Redcat. Maya's presentation was very well received by the students and staffs at RCC. More than a half of the auditorium was filled and sure it was a good turnout. You can check out more of Maya's works on the link below.

Cornelius Cole III 2011

It's the only drawing of Corny I have even though I remember drawing Corny pretty often especially when we didn't have models for his life drawing class at Cal Arts. After the celebration of Corny's life with his family and friends on last Sunday. I couldn't stop thinking about Corny and what he's given to the world of art, animation, and to myself. All I can say is thank you and thank you Corny. And this picture below is the most recent picture of Corny, me, and Steve at the Producers' Show May 2011. I miss you Corny.

As I was looking for a drawing of Corny I did at Cal Arts (Corny was often time a model for his own figure drawing class when a model doesn't show up.) “Betwixt and Between” is an extension of the Korean Cultural Center’s animation exhibition,

“Awesome Blossom.” The characteristic figures are created with simplified lines that are

inspired by an artist’s desire to express the junction of their thoughts and emotions.

The correlation of these thoughts and emotions create art that speaks to the audience

before their eyes.

The existence of these linkages also provides the evidence of the relationship between spiritual interests of the artists as well as the genesis and development of the characters’ unique and instinctive lines.

In each chronological event of the artists’ lives that involves spiritual and emotional contact with related figures are turned into simple lines of characteristic expression.

The viewer is encouraged to see these excerpted characters as the artists’ emotional, psychological and philosophical aspects of the artists’ daily lives. When the role of these highlighted characters is revealed directly with the viewers, it stimulates an imaginative power in the audience.

Art Auction Against Human Trafficking 2011

I felt very fortunate to be included in this inspiring and meaningful event against human trafficking at Real Life Church in Valencia last week. All of my 3 art works I donated were sold and that made me feel even happier :) Two of the 3 works were original watercolor paintings and the other one was a digital print of my painting. So I only have digital copies of these works left now and I am happy that my paintings were sold and used for A GOOD REASON such as helping rescued girls keep their home. Big many thanks to the organizations, 'Zoe' and 'She Dances" and Andres, Sunha, Sun, and more people for organizing this art auction. Also, it was very nice to see so many CalArts grads there at the exhibition with their amazing works.

4th Bi-Annual RCC Animation Showcase and my thoughts

Last night at Riverside City College, Digital Library Auditorium, we had nearly 200 guests that came to watch my students' animation films. About 10 minutes after the showcase began, a good number of the audience had to stand in the back and watch the show simply because there was no seat available. Many of my colleagues from different departments came to support our students. RCC Art Dept was very fortunate to have talented animation artists as judges for the screening and they are my friends and colleagues from Cal Arts Film& Video, UCLA Film & TV, CalArts CAP, and Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Thank you Mary, Hedy, Shiyoon, Mina, Destiny, and Jian!!! My students worked countless hours to complete short animated films. Their commitment and efforts for their film obviously inspire me to continue making my own film. When I first started the 1st bi-annual animation showcase, there were 14 students and 30 guests in a small art classroom with a overhead projector to show a small group of animation students' films. Animation curriculum at RCC is growing very fast and I think it's because of my students' energy and efforts in their works. I want to congratulate all 54 filmmakers that presented their films last night. I will soon post the winning films from this semester's showcase on RCC Art youtube Channel. Thank you all for reading my little thoughts. I am so proud of my students and very happy that I get to be a part of this creative group of artists.

I had a blast at the calarts field trip with my students from RCC. One of the best parts of this visit was to sit in the Palace and my students and I got to do some drawings like old days. I felt like I went back to be a student at Cal Arts. And I must say it felt sooooo good. Thanks Steve Brown for letting us in and thanks Jonny Gomez for lending me some drawing materials. Here is a little preview of my film. This is just a simple concept sketch of a floating tree
that appears in my newest film that is in progress. I have about 10 scenes done out of
about 35 scenes and hoping to complete the film by this summer... or fall. I will post a trailer probably in next couple of weeks. It always feels so great to work on my own film with my own medium ;)

The director's name is Pascui Rivas. I got to animate Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson since the interviewee/cast of this film had a close relationship to those two big stars.

So I have been super busy with so many jobs and events recently. I am participating in the 5th annual Pasadena ArtWalk this year and I just finished putting my animation together for the faculty exhibition at Riverside City College. I am working on 2 feature documentary films and teaching full time... But, but, but,,, I am going to put up some new works once at least 50% of all of those things is done. This is a short animation of my puppy, Allie.
Her playing with toys, treats, etc... was my inspiration. I used charcoal pencil and soft pastels on paper to create this piece. Enjoy!

I am trying to make some art works based on my watercolor paintings and the photoshop layering. This is a revised picture from one of my most recent projects' scenes but that project is on hold. Instead, I am doing some more illustration stuff at the moment. Meanwhile, animation of my puppy, Allie is almost done so that's for a near future.

So I drew these musicians at a bar located in Time Square NYC while visiting the city with Jian few months back. I just used a good old ballpoint pen and I think I did capture all of their impressions. Let's see what the band think about this. Anyways, more drawings are to be posted soon.

I drew this few months back and I should go back there on the 3rd st. and do more life drawings. I love drawing and painting my puppy Allie although I can never get his corgi looking feature in my drawing. Allie is 6 months old and she is border collie and possibly corgi or/and lab mix. I plan to make a short animation with Allie in a near future.

It feels always awesome to do watercolor painting. I painted these over last couple of days for my mom's best friend who's very kind and understanding to have my mom stay over at her place whenever my mom visits here from Korea. I felt much appreciation before and during painting these. These are paintings of her house and little bit of her front yard. And now I am about to deliver these two paintings to her hope she likes it.

I interviewed Betty Lee and Jian Lee and made an animated documentary short

about Asian representations on American mass media.

This film took me about 1~2 months to complete and it was produced at UCLA Animation Workshop in 2009.

Technique and Medium: Rotoscoping, Oil Pastel, Pencil on paper, charcoals, and digital composition.
