My son turned 1 year old today!!

1 yr old Noah

Still from 'Dear My Son'
Today is Noah's birthday. I cannot believe it's been ONE YEAR since my first son was born. Noah grew so fast!!! It has been one of the most difficult times but at the same time the happiest moment of my entire life. I am always so thankful for having the most wonderful wife and son. I made a little animation to celebrate Noah's 1st birthday and he did see the animation a few times. Noah looked very serious when he saw this but the entire film grabbed his attention haha. Like I always do, I traditionally animated and painted with watercolor for each one of the frames in the film. So here it goes around 1000 watercolor papers I used for this. This film is one of the shortest ones I have ever made since I started animating in 2003 but this sure if my most personal film I had fun doing the most. Noah and we are now just so overwhelmed with love all the beautiful birthday notes we have been getting today. I think now I am so ready for my life journey with Noah for the rest of his life~
Nearly 1000 sheets I painted for 'Dear My Son'

So I am a new advisor for the Riverside City College Art Club and with what I have been doing with my animation group combined with what the RCC Art Club already has been doing, our academic year is filled with fun, productive, and creative events. We have such an enthusiastic group this semester and I am so excited about everything we're doing in the Art Club. Some of the highlights of what we did in last 2 months and what we'll be doing in next two months in the attached pics. I just completed working on my newest film and I have a surprising news for you in a near future. Thanks for your time. Have a wonderful day~

KBS TV미술관

So Galapagos Exhibition at Ilmin Museum of Art in Seoul Korea just ended a few days ago. I got all of my watercolor paintings back in my mail and they also sent us a video of my work along with other artists' works which were presented on Korea's major TV channel, KBS as its part of KBS TV Museum. My friend and a curator, Yang Yujin explains about my animation since I wasn't able to go to Korea this winter and actually she did much better job than what I would have done of explaining my own work. I apologize this video is spoken only in Korean and there hasn't been any English translation. But you can still kind of briefly see what kind of works they had at the show. Enjoy.

Galapagos Exhibition update

So here is a little update on what's going on at Ilmin Museum of Art in Seoul (광화문). My family went to check out the show for me since I couldn't make it to the show myself. And here are some pictures my sister, Steph took while they were at Ilmin. My friend and a gallery manager/curator, Yujin told me it was a huge success and recently she was interviewed by one of the major main TV stations KBS for their TV gallery show. I am just honored to be a part of this exhibition with all the great artists. I looked up other artists participating in this show and sure they all have far more experiences and reputations than I do. So that made me fee good haha. I am currently working on my new short animated film and working on a several freelance projects all in my watercolor animation. I am just thankful that my medium can be well used and recognized even though it sure is not a mainstream animation medium I have been pursuing. Enough of me talking here. Thanks again for checking my blog out. More updates on my new film coming soon! (Hopefully)

Galapagos Exhibition @ Ilmin Museum of Art opens

I am very fortunate and honored to be included in this group exhibition called, 'Galapagos' at Ilmin Museum of Art which is one of the major private art museums in Seoul, Korea. I sincerely thank my friend Yang Yujin for organizing this great exhibition. All the participating artists are super amazing.

This exhibition is extra special for me since it's my very first exhibition participating in my home country, Korea.

The only unfortunate thing about it is that I cannot be there in Korea this winter. The show will be held between 12/28 (yesterday in Seoul time) and 2/17 in the new year. The show's main theme is 'LIFE,'  'SURVIVAL,' and perhaps, 'REBORN.' My participating pieces are some of the original watercolor animation frames from two of my films I made at Cal Arts, Naked Branches (2007) and Palette of the Ocean (2006).

Click this link to the exhibition info on Neolook.

My parents and sister are going to see the exhibition tomorrow and I will upload more pictures of my work, program, etc once my sister sends me the 'good' pictures ;-)

According to what the curators said, at their opening last night, they got lots of positive feedback about my animation and my pieces and the press and news representatives were very interested in my work. It only makes me want to continue pushing myself more in my animation art.

Enough of me talking here. Thanks for checking out my blog. In about a week, I will have one more update on the exhibition with the pictures I will be receiving from my sister~!

7th Biannual RCC Animation Showcase and vacation

Last Friday, at RCC Digital Library Auditorium, we had over 200 guests for the 7th Biannual RCC Animation Showcase. It was a huge success. The audience included my own colleagues from animation schools and companies, Jee Hyun Yoo, Arem Kim, Rami Kim (as judges), the president of the RCCD Board, Trustee of the board, bunch of art and ADM faculty members, my students' families and friends, etc. Each student was given between 1.5 months to 3 months to work on a short animated film and most students truly pushed their limits to express their arts and tell their stories. This link below is a film, 'The Little Princess' by Crystal Franklin, a winner of 'Best in Show' award which is the highest honor of the entire showcase. The Little Princess is a film about a symbol of love created with a paper cutout/stop motion animation techniques accompanied by a digital compositing in Adobe After Effects.

Please check out more selected films/award winning films from the showcase this semester on a link below. Believe me they are all worth checking out.

Then this video below is me freestyling in Korean at the showcase reception recorded by one of my students Rick. Kerry and Nick did the beatbox and I didn't do the best freestyle rap but I did it cuz I kind of promised my students according to what they said. I regret it but hey it already happened and the video is already out on youtube. I told my students I am not ready to be the next PSY yet haha.

The pictures below are the ones my students and I took at the auditorium and at the reception.

with some of the winners from the showcase. Charlene, Crystal, me, Ade, Frank, and Jacky

And finally it's a vacation. I am so ready to rock and roll with my family.
